Well, the old guy is gone and even though I don't attend Mass anymore, I think Pope John Paul II was a good man.
I remember when I was in CHIJ Katong, and the Pope was in SG. And all the catholic schools sent representatives..... I got to go and since church didn't really mean much, it was one of those ho-hum lets-get-it-over-with school sessions.
I remember waiting in the drizzle, waiting for him to come by in his armoured vehicle. And I remember suddenly getting caught up in this swell of emotion and frenzy when he went past. Close enough for me to touch. And I remember the sense of awe I felt.
But that was a long long time ago. Didn't agree with some of his principles as I got older but good man nevertheless.
Go in peace, Karol Wojtyla, I think you certainly deserve it.
