So - a killer who slaughter's in the name of Allah is gone for good.
You remember the case..... Dutch film-maker Theo van Gogh was murdered in broad daylight. But why do I bring this up? Have I watched any of his documentaries? Have I even heard of him prior to his killing? Actually, no I have not.
What I DO take exception to is the rationale behind the madman's thinking."Bouyeri had told the court he had acted out of religious conviction. Clutching a copy of the Koran, he said that "the law compels me to chop off the head of anyone who insults Allah and the prophet". "
A mind that accepts such a proposition is not exactly anchored in reality. Doesn't matter which religion you subscribe to because ALL of them preach tolerance and a basic respect for your fellow man. What is it about religion, that makes some people twist, turn and deform it to suit their own purposes?
The Dutch may be shocked about how someone who grew up in such a liberal and tolerant environment could succumb to such a hideous idealogy. But c'mon. The man was human, after all. No matter how much you give, it is human nature to want more. Thirst for more. Crave for more. Become filled with desire. Filled with passion. It might even be something as simply, yet as powerful, as loneliness, that started him down the road to radical Islam. There are as many possible reasons as there are personalities.
Accept THAT and you prepare for the worst in human nature.
Natural introvert, learned extrovert.

Why is it that Islam seems to attract more of these extremists than any other religion?
it does, doesn't it? i find it really sad in a way.
then again, christians through the ages haven't exactly covered themselves in glory. but at least they don't go around killing people. :o
Not condoning any kind of violence by whomever, I'd like to remind you that Christianity throughout its history had its 'fair share' of violence. Think public executions, burning of live people, torture, murder, crusades; all in the name of God. Extremism is nothing new to Christianity. We see it in a more 'political correct' form in the USA right now, where politics are influenced a lot by religion, where people do not have a choice to be free because the lawmakers of the country use the bible as a reference for their policies. And no, no one gets killed because of that, at least in a physical sense (although occasionally you have nutcases here that decide to attack abortion clinics / doctors for example, and people have been killed), but when you are not allowed to be who you are, part of your being is killed, you are not free and are certainly not living in 'the land of the free'...
Mr. Van Gogh was a very colorful character with very strong opinions, and he did not shy away from expressing them, or better, he gloated in being a 'free mind'. For example, he very often referred to muslims as "followers of the goat f*cker" and called the muslim prophet a pedophile. I always wonder how long it would take a nutcase 'extreme christian' in the USA to kill the person (guns everywhere here, it's scary) who would make such comments about jesus on and on again on tv, radio in columns etc.
DinD - you don't have to remind me about anything.
My post was about religion in general and how it gets twisted. It wasn't about something etheral and intangible like the freedom to be who you want to be.
Might I remind YOU that recently, I posted about a man who believed in Christianity so much he thought he was Jesus.
This is the same man who (i) impregnated his daughters (ii) killed his own children because they were being taken away.
My point?
Religion can be good when it lifts you. But it is ALSO the very same fertile ground that unleashes madmen of all kinds.
