Tomorrow is Chinese New Year eve.
Holy crap, is CNY a big thing.
My mom is chinese (I am 50% Eurasian, 50% Cantonese) and the traditional reunion dinner on the eve is a must. Woe be to the child, no matter how old, if he/she doesn't turn up. You're only excused if you're married and doing the dinner with your in-laws. *amused*
Since Singapore is about 70% Chinese, all the shops will close down. People buy their groceries to ride out the period. I learnt the hard way to make sure I had enough ciggies. Motor workshops will close for, sometimes, the full 15 days. So double woe to you if you're buggered in an accident.
We will usher in the year of the Dog, which is my Mom's zodiac, so I hope it will be a good year for her.
There's plenty of tradition that happens around this period but since my family's pretty secular nowadays, we don't do very much. But still, it's always interesting.
What's especially interesting is that there are a lot of traditional Chinese people working in this company (think : heartlander) and their preparations have been an eye-opener for me.
Any day you learn something is a day not wasted, eh?
