Oh dear God.
I was going to give my 2 cents worth on fat Australians and their underweight toilet bowls. But then I came across this news article.
It's short but tragic.
13 year girl feels poorly. Thinks she's having a bit of a tummy problem. And then gives birth to a baby girl. Father is a 15 year old she doesn't want to see again. Girl didn't even know she was pregnant.
According to the article, she was only 13, just barely, when she and the boy tried IT. The teenager, from Devon, southwest England, said she had lost her virginity on the day of her 13th birthday. I like the way they write teenager. But she's not. She's just spankingly fresh into her teens. She's still a child, for crying out loud! On her 13th birthday!
I can understand a young teen's curiousity about sex. I can understand the desire to try and be an adult. But what happened to her education? THEIR education? Why was there no one around long enough to impress in her the enormity of what had happened?
This is a sore topic for me. Education. EDUCATION. I cannot say it enough. Education is key, for our kids, and it's rubbish what's being taught in schools. And yet.... yet.... why should school's be asked to bear this burden? It's not the school's fault, eh? Where are the parents??
Morals.
Ethics.
Manners.
Civility.
These are mere words, mere shells, which cannot give the required gravitas to the ability to nuture themselves as people, as families. Granted, it's a lot for a mere 13 year old to contain, but it would have made a start, for one.
It is not a curriculum meant for schools. It is for parents. To inculcate into their children that there is more to life than money. Than instant gratification. That there is decency. There is consideration. It's about how to act and think like a decent human being.
I will continuously bemoan the fact that our society is getting worse and worse. Would it surprise you to know that the the MasterChief is a good 21 years older than I am? Why him? Because he's a product of a generation that believed in some things missing from MY generation. He's a wonderful man and person but the edge that no one else ever had was that he was a true blue Gent. Southern, so that's an added advantage to him lol. But Gent, nevertheless!!
Heh, you think I'm bad now. Wait until I'm a crotchety 80 year old.
Natural introvert, learned extrovert.

Greg, your words are too bloody true. It's a damned vicious cycle.
One of the reasons I don't want kids! :o
Agree with you. We really have to move with the times. We are still teaching kids to abstinence. Sure, that's fine. But there are alot of kids out there thanks to the internet, telly or whatever kids are readin and watching these days...kids know about sex. They are curious about sex. Am all for teaching kids about safe sex. Taking precautions. We have to be realistic, kids as young as 13 year olds are having sex. And many STILL think that they can get rid of their babies by eating pineapples and jumping up and down. But unfortunately, society is not ready for that *shakes head* And when they are ready, it might be too late. Parents, we need parents to help. Totally agree that we need parents to help with teaching of values and morals. Venting some here but many of us sense that parents are shrugging such responsibilities and leaving it to educators to teach that. I worry for the younger generation. These are the ones we are gonna depend on to protect and defend us. God help us all.
Oh Liza.
:o
I'm so resigned on the Singaporean state of affairs when it comes to sexual education.
Our parents, by and large, are hopeless. And the material the schools are asked to use is not up to it.
