Typical

This is quite, quite typical of Singapore.

Singapore is betting on a clutch of top international scientists to come up with new wonder drugs to combat diseases such as cancer, dengue and disorders including diabetes.

But the island of 4.4 million did not launch this scientific campaign for humanitarian reasons. It wants to create new money-spinners for an economy that is looking to reinvent itself.

Yup - sounds like Singapore.
We have next to nothing in terms of resources. So everything's carted in. We lured those scientists with Big Money, oh yes we did. Millions and millions. We created laws that would make it easy for them to go to medical trials and to bring the finished products to the open market. We've made the taxes attraction and we've also built a huge ass, state of the art complex to house all the companies and their R&D labs.

We're good at bringing in talent this way.

And I very much doubt that there will be any handwringing in Singapore over the use of stem cells in research.

In another generation, America won't *have* a biotechnology industry.

That is true, up to a point, Barry.

No love lost when it comes to making money. But they are sensible to the fact that if they're doing unethical work, really prominent scientists won't be willing to relocate. They're quite touchy on that and a scientist or two has had to suffer the wrath of an indignant Singaporean government.

You know Singapore and Kuwait are countries that alot of countries can look up too. They have had brillant leaders with far reaching ideas that were put to work and they have made there dreams come true.
Every country has there draw backs but when I look at the plusses and minuses of those countries they have a lot to be proud of. The educated in this world always prevail. The fact that corruption is kept in check is what has allowed them to involve into investment powerhouses. Be proud.

Peace
