I did my walkie again this evening.
Walked into work this afternoon in my t-shirt, pseudo tennis skirt and my walkie shoes and everyone turned around.
Partly it's because the thud of my soles is loud - these babies have good soles - and partly it's because.... well.... Monday through Friday I look like an executive. When I turn up in stuff like to-day, it's rather unexpected. Wah, Fiona, why so sporty to-day? one girl said slowly, as she eyed me up and down. I'm walking home tonight garnered a loud gasp and a roll of her eyes. That roll said clearly she thought I was out of my mind. I really don't give a shit, but that's another story.
I should probably explain, though.
Call centres don't exactly require people to dress up. A simple shirt, a skirt, sandals. That's more than sufficient. And that's great. Problem is, in my last job, I was a suit. And a tailored skirt looks distinctly different from some frou-frou thingie bought at a mass market clothing stall. You know what I mean when I say cut, colour and fabric are more important than just a jacket.
I've learnt not to judge a person by the clothes they wear but..... sad to say, the masses don't realise that. What I have learnt, however, is you can tell what kind of person one is, by attitude and bearing. How one carries oneself. Self assurance. Confidence. All very telling signs. People who know will read the minutae.
How do *you* carry yourself?
Natural introvert, learned extrovert.

Clothes do not make the man - or the woman - in my opinion too. You have the right idea Fiona.
I don't think I actually 'carry' myself at all. I just say rude things and that usually gets people's attention.
Yep, 'carry oneself' is the right idea. Kinda like strutting your stuff without being too obnoxiously obvious about the strutting part.
When I was young, someone told me that the first thing people notice is shoes. Keep them clean, shined, etc. I followed that advice for many years while in the corporate punishment tank, but if you judged me by my shoes these days, I'm a homeless street bum begging for dollars.
Friday is dress down day here at my work, although its not very strict anyways.
Often a collegue and I instigate a 'smart week' where we come in on full on suits and ties and things. Usually gets a few questions asked.
Although how far do you live from work? 'Walking home' isnt that much of an effort if your just round the corner!
Ozle
Hey Paul, absolutely. Clothes reveal, but they don't make.
Jimbo, you're just generally cool so THAT's all right. lol
Winston, shoes are important, yes. But I'd bet if I met you, you'd give me a fair sense of self assurance :)
Ozle, my walkies home mean a fast stride, controlled breathing, and about 50 minutes of (hopefully) butt enhancing exercise.
I wear what I want but I do try to wear nice shoes.
Hi TJ.
Seems to be a male-oriented mantra... nice shoes...
For women it doesn't matter. Shoes are always an addiction! *chuckles*
