Not a good way.....

..... to start the New Year. At least not for the Thais.

The bombings late Sunday and early Monday capped a year of unrest in Thailand, including a military coup three months ago and an increasingly violent Muslim insurgency in the south.

Six near-simultaneous explosions Sunday night killed two people and injured 26.

Hours later, near the same shopping complex where thousands of people had planned to count down the New Year, three blasts minutes after midnight wounded eight people, including a foreigner who was rushed to the hospital after her legs were blown off, the iTV television station reported.

Thaty's pretty sucky. Thailand has a deep history of unrest, much like the Indonesians. But most of it's normally bloodless, in a way. Body count way low for the frequency in which this happens. But on New Years? Probably the worst time it could happen. Or best. Depends on whose perspective I, guess.

I shall be watching Thailand quite closely. I am off for a short holiday, my first in 2+ years, and it will be in Phuket. Fortunately, we're staying at
Bernie's friend's place and will be off the main touristy places. But we cannot seclude ourselves the entire 4 days we'll be there.

Oh well. We'll see what happens. Travel insurance has already been purchased. lol.

Paul,
not openly, no.
But racial issues always crop up from time to time.

Singapore is mostly chinese (abt 70&) and malay (abt 25%) and the rest are the indians & minority races.

But the big issues are Malaysia and Indonesia, within which SG is sandwiched.....
