Oh. My. God.
Ick ick ick!
I had no idea :(Your office desk harbors far more bacteria than your workplace restroom, and if you're a woman, chances are your workspace has more germs than your male co-workers', a new research report shows.
Women have three to four times the number of bacteria in, on and around their desks, phones, computers, keyboards, drawers and personal items as men do, the study by University of Arizona professor Charles Gerba showed. Gerba, a professor of soil, water and environmental sciences, tested more than 100 offices on the UA campus and in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oregon and Washington, D.C. The $40,000 study was commissioned by the Clorox Co.....
..... The average office desktop has 400 times more bacteria than the average office toilet seat, Gerba said.
Gerba said using a hand sanitizer and using a disinfectant on office surfaces helps, with 25 percent fewer bacteria found on surfaces that were regularly disinfected. Once-a-day use should be sufficient.
This is terrible news. I'm all grossed out now. lol. I might just go out and get a disinfectant asap :o

Ahem:
The $40,000 study was commissioned by the Clorox Co.....
Please take this study with a grain of salt. Actually, a pile of salt.
400 times the bacteria count on an office desk vs a toilet seat is a completely meaningless statistic... what KINDS of bacteria, bunky?
I'd eat my lunch off my bacteria-laden office desk without a second thought; I can't imagine circumstances under which I'd eat it off a toilet seat. The difference is the *kinds* of bacteria that are likely to be in each location.
The overwhelming majority of bacteria in the environment are utterly, utterly harmless; some are even beneficial (like the ones that live in your GI tract and help you digest certain foods; lose them and you'll get quite sick.)
Buy some Clorox wipes if you want to. I have some at the office to clean up spills around the coffeepot. But don't stress about the bacteria on your desk.
Disinfect your desk and you'll probably get an allergy.
Bacteria are everywhere, including in and on us. But provided someone with cholera or typhoid doesn't crap on your desk, you should be OK.
Barry and Steven,
I know the article should be taken with a huge tablespoon of salt.
Urgh! At that point in time it just seemed really gross! But I know about bactaria in general and I won't be changing my habits. :)
There, that should be a comfort, eh? *chuckles*
