Update : I'm making this a sticky.
Update II : Deadline extended until 21 Oct midnight. Petition will be presented by hand at Istana on Monday, 22 Oct.
______________________________________________________
Right, I came across this in the paper last night and couldn't post this fast enough.
There is a petition, online, right now, for the abolishment of a statue that prohibits homosexual sex in Singapore. That would be section 377A of the Penal Code. It's been there for a long long time.
And it will remain there a long long time, because my Government feels that homosexual sex is bad for a a number of reasons, but primarily because it reflects the general views of a conservative society. (Can you say voting public? Can you say open secret?)
The online petition has collected about 4000+ signatories currently and will continue to collect them until 19 Oct 2007.
If you are a Singaporean or a Permanent Resident, please take a moment to reflect on how this infringes on a gay person's intrinsic right to live. Being gay is not a crime.
The full statute is as follows :Unnatural offences.
Unnatural offences. 377.
Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animals, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to fine.
Explanation. Penetration is sufficient to constitute the carnal intercourse necessary to the offence described in this section.
Outrages on decency.377A.
Any male person who, in public or private, commits, or abets the commission of, or procures or attempts to procure the commission by any male person of, any act of gross indecency with another male person, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 2 years.
If you want to check this, you can visit Singapore Statutes online. Read through it. It's quite short. You may not agree with having something inserted something up YOUR butt, but it's a question of choice. No goverment should have the right to dictate what goes on in your own home. So please, take a moment.
And then go sign the petition.
Natural introvert, learned extrovert.

JW,
You KNOW you're incorrigable, yes? :D
Rich,
Yes for life. But no one's really interested in beastiality, so we're sort of lobbying only for 377A. lol/
it's really a matter of time. as politicians do, they are treading delicately as too many angry people on both sides to deal with.
seriously what do the other side have? a law with no bite since the govt is unlikely to prosecute and an ever streaming tide of homo representation in and on all media. the more they protest, the more the issue is in the news giving platform for counter arguments.
even if the govt drag its foot on this, i say, let them hold on to their law a little longer, that's all they got.
Toots,
I agree with you, and as the result showed, it was not repealed :)
I totally expected that.
But I also appreciated the publicity it generated. I feel that the more this is broached, the more it is discussed, then the more people are made to look at things in a rational manner, as the MPs who supported the ban all showed.
I do feel I will see this abolished in my life time. So.... they have another 50 years to get it done. lol.
