Nanny, what can I get you?

*small sigh*

My paternal grandma, Nanny, is 90 this month. The family is having a celebration with an aunt from Australia in town. But what on earth do I get Nanny?

The unfortunate thing is that Nanny's memory is going and the uncle and aunt living with Nanny aren't exactly helpful. "Just get what you think is appropriate, Fiona." What the hell kind of suggestion is that?

No, I am no longer close to this side of the family for various reasons.

But I love my grandma and want to get her something that'll make her smile for days and days on end! However, she's soooooo dependent on the uncle and aunt living with her now, and I can't be sure that whatever I get Nanny will be chucked away and ignored.

Worse case, I'll get her a huge bouquet of fresh flowers. But I want to do something really nice. Unfortunately, even my Dad and sis are stumped because, I mean, what do you get for an elderly relative whose memory is gone, and who is homebound 24/7?

This is miserable :(

I've struggled with that dilemma for people who pretty "have" everything ... but the one thing I keep coming back to is the gift of "time" - reading a book to them, rubbing their feet, listening to their favourite music. She loves you, it's all good

Babes, would you like to get this longevity bun that I got for my grandma? It made her smile! http://dream-catalyst.blogspot.com/2009/04/happy-100th-birthday-grandma.html

I can pass you contact details. Let me know. :)
