Husbands

I think this qualifies as a WTF category.

Seen in to-day's copy of the
Straits Times Interactive - Husband for sale.
Apparently, some men think that it's ok to get paid for a bogus marriage to foreigners coming to Singapore with the view to working the sex trade. How odd.

The first thing that struck me was :
1) Why were these men still unmarried?
Asian men still unmarried in their 30s and 40s? When societal pressure is for progency to continue the family line? That's a first.

2) Were these men gay?
I have nothing against gays. Or lesbians. Or bisexuals. To each his own and no judgement made. But if they were gay, did the marriage help them stay IN the closet?

What thoughts to start one's day.

Re: why these men are in their 30-40's and still unmarried. I think more than being gay, it may have something to do with their present socio-economic status. Why wouldn't they want to get married just to provide a "green card"? They get paid, get a slight lift to their unmarried status and who knows? They might even get some cosy marital activity goin.

because the women they are marrying are illegal hookers. the ones who don't have medical records to prove they are "clean", the ones that are trying to get past the 2-week social visit limitation.

people marry for all kinds of reasons. i have no problems with that.

but providing streetwalkers an avenue isn't one i really hold with.

There is however, a curious story of "hope" in the article. There are stranger things I would consider if a Green Card carrot was dangled in front of my face.

stranger things for a green card? oh yes, i would too.

i've just got *firm* views on illegal streetwalkers in a society that still holds discussing sexual issues as taboo.

actually, to be more specific, i couldn't care less who these guys marry. i just have issues with men who visit illegal streetwalkers and take home STDs to their wives.

oh well.
