Sunshine

I don't know about suntanning, but I do know the following :

(1) when I did the night shift, it felt incredibly good to stand in the morning sun as I waited for my bus. Not for warmth, because I'm forever hot and bothered. But good, as in the body felt good, even if just for a mere 5 minutes.
(2) as an adolescent, I had to deal with spotty skin sometimes. But being in the sun would help enormously. Especially if you had a stubborn bump on, for example, your back.

So perhaps there's some truth in this.

Since I recently moved to the desert, my mom has been harping on the sunscreen thing... "Do you have some? Are you wearing it? I know you're indoors, but sun is a sneaky bastard...". So I called her up and read her the article you've linked. At this bit:
"n the last three months alone, four separate studies found it helped protect against lymphoma and cancers of the prostate, lung and, ironically, the skin. The strongest evidence is for colon cancer."
Mom wondered how they managed to get sunlight up their arses and was certain she never wanted to go near any such sunbathing spot.
Yep, she's a trip.
