World peace

Dak-Ind asks about Deepvali.

Perhaps it is easier for me to notice these things. As an Eurasian, one of 4 "official" racial groups, I represent under 3% of the Singaporean population. Markedly different from what he mentioned in his comment :)

Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is celebrated as the victory of good over evil. Light over dark. The tradition is to celebrate with the visiting of families, gathering of loved ones, starting of a "new year" with new clothes, gifts and much celebration.

Sounds familiar, yes? Most of the major ethnic groups world wide will celebrate their version of the new year and, I am happy to say, Singaporeans do it with no less vigor.

I love these designs..... they're laid out, usually in front of the front door (or just inside) and symbolize a warm and heartfelt welcome to visitors who come by. I've always found the designs fascinating. They're laid out in dyed rice grains and other cereals/grains and are pretty interesting to view.

The Muslim celebration coming up on Thursday is pretty much the same.... celebration, joy and love. Don't all major religions have that special date marked out for peace, forgiveness and love?

Haha - world peace.
I feel like Sandra Bullock's character in Ms Congeniality.

PS. An in-depth article on Deepavali may be found here.
