I don't understand

This illegal worker affair is truly beyond me.

I don't get it. How do illegal workers have so much "clout"? How does a march and a protest force the country you are in, illegally, to give you legal status? The arrogance behind the mindset holding such thoughts makes me shake my head.

"We are the backbone of what America is, legal or illegal, it doesn't matter," said Melanie Lugo, who with her husband and their third-grade daughter joined a rally of some 75,000 in Denver. "We butter each other's bread. They need us as much as we need them."

Will you look at that statement. We are the backbone of what America is, legal or illegal, it doesn't matter. Was that chosen deliberately to provoke a response from the reader? Or was that just casually thrown in from someone random?

I personally think a large percentage of this can be attributed to greed. Greed from the companies who hire such workers. And greed from the people who agreed to the work.

Ok, they have a right to be indignant. I understand the new laws would have criminalised them. But you cannot get away from the fact that they are there illegally. You want to live and work there? You want the right to vote and make your vice heard? Do it within the framework of the country. You cannot run away from that fact.

Actually, I think the new laws might be good. Makes people think twice. Malaysia did something right, for once. They had a huge problem with Indonesian workers sneaking in illegally to work as well. They offered a 2 to 3 month grace period where they could come out of hiding and go home, without arrest. And they had to be registered as workers during that period as well. Go home, get the paperwork done. Then come back to Malaysia to work legally.

Holy shit, if the damned Malaysians can do something about it, surely the US can as well? Or have something worked out? Freedoms are all very well but surely it is not meant to be without limits? Or within reasons?
