Yup. When we want something, we don't muck around.Singapore has allocated 1.4 billion dollars (880 million US) to boost research in biomedical sciences, water treatment and digital media, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said.
The strategic research programs in the three areas will be implemented in the next five years and are aimed at turning these sectors into economic growth drivers to keep the city-state's competitive edge amid increasingly tougher rivalry.
Some of the local government's policies were/are remarkably short-sighted. Like the classic "stop at 2" campaign in the '70s. Land scarcity an issue? Not enough public housing? Don't have more than 2 babies per couple, ok? Now, a mere 30 years on, we're having problems maintainining our population growth.
But when it comes to money, they don't muck around. I have to agree with them on this, though. Biomedical sciences..... cures, treatments and the lives of our people at stake.
Good call.
