Singapore in the news. Again!Singapore will invest more than 110 million US dollars to develop a "clean energy" industry with solar energy as a key area of research, the government announced Friday.
The tropical island-state with average temperatures of 26.8 Celsius (80 Fahrenheit) is hoping that the five-year programme will generate more than a billion dollars in annual value-added income and create 7,000 jobs by 2015.
The programme was announced at the close of a Research Innovation and Enterprise Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
Yup.
There ya go.
We always invest with an eye to making profits. And whilst we may seem quite mercenary to outsiders, we really don't have much of a choice. I'm not one for Lee Kuan Yew's propaganda, but I DO believe the only way we'll survive as a nation is to invest in technology. Of any sort. High-end services, not products.
We have no land mass, no natural resources, no cultivation of any sort. I think we have.... a single goat farm. lol. For crying out loud, we have to import almost all our food and water! So survival can manifest itself in many ways.
Funny thing though.... one of our most profitable state companies deals in oil rigs and the manufacture thereof. Ironic, eh?
Oh well, wherever the money is, eh?

Fiona it sounds like you Singapore folks are using your heads! :)
It's pretty terrific that investing in clean energy is becoming profitable.
Paul,
My government is nothing if not practical. *wry grin*
Rich,
I rather suspect that the only reason people are interested in this is beacause of the pursuit of profit. Which is a little sad, in a way.......
