Ok, lookie, I came across an article on a Viking ship recreation.
It's pretty interesting, as news articles go. But then I got curious and surfed for pictures of The Sea Stallion from Glendalough. And damn...
Look at the pictures.
There is next to no space for anything else, except the 60 bodies that man the oarlines.... my goodness...
And this is supposed to be the closest replica of a warship to date, a reconstruction of the Skuldelev 2-wreck, which was excavated from the bottom of Roskilde Fjord in 1962.
Amazing. 60 men + weopon and spares, all squeezed together on a boat like that. Barely space to move, let alone stretch out and sleep. And yet the Vikings are famous for being war-like, forging an old empire that stretched and stretched. Isn't it amazing how men coped before GPS was born? Before ziplock storage bags? Before laundry?
Ok, so they smelled bad and made do. But my gods, they made do!!

... vikings are just plain cool....
Eric
if you haven't, read "Eaters of the Dead" by Crichton. Very good.
I agree with Og on the book.
It's a good mixture of fictional
with historical facts mixed it.
I've read it twice - about 20 years apart.
You have to read the footnotes as you go along though.
JimBob
Jimbob,
With both you AND Og recommending it, I will look it up.
Can't guarantee that I'll read it though. lol
Oh, hell, you GOTTA. Decapitation, disembowling, women freaked out by circumcision, random rough sex with strange women, viking funerals, muslim men humping viking women, and swords the size of lumber.
Me wonders if "swords the size of lumber" is a euphemism for something else... :o
